It was much simpler when we were kids: our parents would just push in The Sound of Music in the VCR and we'd learn how to sing by beginning with Do Re Mi and so on. We could do the same with our kids, but don't expect the same effect as you have lots of competition in the music department, what with all those music channels playing more modern music.

There is competition even for the musically inclined - kids would rather go to the movies or play their video games than practice their scales on whatever instrument it was you bought for them. Getting them their own instruments to learn, such as guitars, piano keyboards, violins, and even harmonicas is a great way to get them hooked into music, but don't stop there...

Highly recommended are the DVDs that teach kids how to sing and play instruments that abound, from Children's Sing A Long Nursery Rhymes and Disney Princess Sing A Long Songs to Drumming for Kids and different volumes of Fiddle Kids, Kids Guitar and even Ukelele For Kids. But don't miss out on the different computer games that do so much more.

Make music learning fun for them by incorporating today's new fangled technology into their music education. Don't let them sit around playing war games all day. Rather than your standard shoot-to-kill video game, get them computer games, CDs and DVDs that are music-related.

For example, the Sesame Street: Music Maker is so much fun that kids 3 years old and up spend hours on the different activities, not noticing they're learning the important fundamentals of music such as rhythm, tempo and pitch, in the process. Soon, they would know the difference between the sound of a flute from a piano!
