Reading Games

Not a lot of kids these days are as interested in reading as we used to be, what with computer games and television pushing books to the backseat. It's much harder, too, with our favorite classics being turned into feature films. While it's great to see Narnia and the Shire in all their glory at your nearest cinema, the skills we collect as we read are lost somewhere along the way. Besides stoking the imagination and developing a child's own creativity, basic skills such as grammar and spelling are at high risk.

Thankfully, kids will always want to play games, and why not get them those that let them learn how to read, write and spell, too?

Books and Card Games

There are many books that act as How-to guides to turn games into educational reading exercises for your kids. These books not only provide the most simple yet innovative educational games, but also how to reproduce the materials needed for these games, which usually employ props to stimulate the child's visual-mental comprehension. Aside from the popular reading comprehension card games, there are other diverse games as Letter-Sound Bingo, Calendar Tic-Tac-Toe, Word-Match Dominoes, Spelling Board Games, and more.

Of course, there are also books that are valuable as just books, mostly as guides to improve reading and writing skills. One of the most interesting books we've found is Harriet Wittels and Joan Greisman's "How To Spell It," which has a list of the most misspelled words in the English language, accompanied by the correct spelling beside it. It's not only terrific for Spelling Bee hopefuls, but for their mommies and daddies, too.

A step up from games in books are computer games as educational reading tools for your kids. The interactive games let your kids participate more actively, such as making your way around virtual neighborhoods as you read street signs, designing t-shirts by completing words with missing letters, playing bingo with consonants and vowel sounds, and picture riddles. Kids learn proper pronunciation, vocabulary and spelling, sight-word recognition, word-object association, and visual discrimination and develop their memory, pattern recognition, and other reading skills through the different reading games.

Some computer games even track your child's progress and makes reports that you can refer to, at any time. Some also provide easily modifiable multi-level settings that you can adjust to your kids' learning capacities. As most of these games deal with phonics and phonemes, the software will require that you install a sound card and speakers to achieve optimum results with your kids.

The "Clifford Reading" computer game allows kids to record their speaking voices as they read a story aloud. Playback then lets your child point out any mistakes they may have made and prompts new recordings. Your kids develop reading and speaking skills, as well as confidence in their abilities in a manner that's loads of fun.

Other Fun Reading Games

Other great educational yet fun reading games for your kids are those where the whole family can participate.

Bible Mad Gab is a wonderful card game for ten year old kids and older, and allows up to twelve players. Several cards will contain strange-grouped words which one player will read, and the rest will have to guess what biblical phrase is hidden among the words. This game not only improves reading, listening and comprehensive skills, but also introduces your kids to bible stories, and gives valuable lessons in working as a team.
